3 things you must remember when hiring an Architect

What do you need to keep in mind when hiring an Architect?

Our answer comprises of the following three things.

  1. Professional Registration: The Architect must be registered with his/her National Council/Board of Architecture. This allows you to verify the Architect’s credentials and legally binds the Architect to his/her design. Please note that Architecture Consultants or Architectural Designers are NOT Architects.
  2. Clarity in Contract & Fee: Architects may charge by the hour, a flat fee or a percentage of the budget as remuneration for their services. Discuss, in detail, the timelines, responsibilities and the fee.
  3. Willingness to listen: Architects are highly trained and possess exceptional creative abilities. Find one who will treat your input with respect. One who will understand your needs and wants before engaging his/her skills and know-how on the project.

Are skylights for you? Our expert advice.

Skylights, as the name suggests, are a great way to let in natural light. The decision to go with a skylight for your private or commercial building needs a better understanding of the pros and cons of this design element.

ramp-1149681_640.jpgPros:

  • Skylights save money. They do not consume electricity, do not require wiring or switches and they do not mandate electrical safety checks over their lifetime.
  • They add to visual appeal. A view of the stars at night and blue skies in the mornings are a luxury in the concrete jungles.
  • They increase property value. Properties with skylights carry with them a higher price tag and resale value.
  • Designed well, they can let in healthy doses of sunlight and vent stale air for better living quality.

Cons:

  • If they are made or installed incorrectly, they will develop leaks. This could result in water damage or uncontrolled air flow in the structure.
  • They could end up being a security risk. Reinforced glass and frames are a must.
  • In the hotter latitudes, they trap more heat than normal roofs or walls. And in the colder latitudes, they have a tendency of losing warmth. Both of these lead to higher air conditioning bills.

In conclusion, skylights are beautiful for homes and commercial spaces. But they are not ideal for every one of them.

Bamboo in Construction: Practicality

bamboo-1551135_640.jpg

Bamboo has long been used to make musical instruments, weapons of combat, medicine and for hundreds of other applications. It is a sustainable resource and has a proven history in construction. Bamboo has the following advantages as a construction raw material:

  • Low cost & weight: Bamboo weighs 4 times less than Steel and it costs 100 times less than Carbon Fibre, with no compromise in strength. Transport and installation is much faster and economical.
  • High tensile strength & elasticity: Studies have concluded that bamboo has a higher tensile strength than steel. Bamboo is also more elastic than traditional building materials and is therefore highly preferred in earthquake prone areas.
  • Healthier for us & the environment: Unlike cement & asbestos, bamboo poses no risk to our health. Also, the cultivation and disposal of bamboo does not damage our environments.

In addition, when opting for bamboo as a raw material, practicality demands we consider:

  • Expertise of craftsmen: Most engineers & and construction teams are not traditionally qualified to build with bamboo. The planned output may not be achieved with such teams.
  • Treatment: Bamboo must be treated against insects and fungi before reaching the construction site. Untreated, it does not last long.
  • Thermal Expansion Rate: Steel-reinforced concrete works well because steel and concrete have similar Thermal Expansion Rates. But bamboo-reinforced concrete tends to crack when the temperature fluctuates. Research is being carried out to develop a bamboo composite material which mimics steel in this aspect.

Further research on the material and on construction techniques may unlock a bigger role for bamboo. But a prudent approach seems best for now.

Lesser known facts about the Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty is an iconic monument. It is a gift from the people of France to the citizens of the United States of America. It celebrates American Independence and was a welcome sight to immigrants arriving on ships.

Here are a few facts about Lady Liberty that are not well-known:

  1. She is a representation of “Libertas”, the Roman Goddess of Liberty. She carries in her left hand a tablet inscribed “July 4, 1776” (in Roman numerals). It is the date on which the U.S. Declaration of Independence was adopted.
  2. It was discovered (in 1982) that the head was misaligned during the original construction. It was off-center by 2 feet. Engineers and workmen corrected it in late 1985.
  3. At her feet are broken shackles, symbolizing the progress from oppression and slavery. She is also moving her right foot forward, toward a new era.
  4. The statue is not Green. It is made mostly of Copper and the colour is due to  Oxidation of the metal.
  5. The 14.717 acre island on which she stands is called Liberty island and was previously known as Bedloe’s island. Bedloe’s has served as a quarantine station for smallpox, summer residence for an Earl and even as a military garrison in its recorded history.
  6. The Statue of Liberty is one of many nicknames. Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, the designer of the statue, named her “Liberty Enlightening the World”. It is also accepted that he modeled the face after that of his mother.

Expert tips for a great home office

Most of us have clear physical boundaries between our offices and homes. Our work and living spaces are separated by a commute. This is a great help when separating those two aspects of our lives. But if we decide to build a home office, what should we consider when creating that space?

A. How much space do I really need?

The answer varies based on the nature of work, equipment and individual preferences.  Commercial office spaces are between 150 square feet and 250 square feet. These numbers are not suitable guides to home offices and so address this issue with your designer.

B. How do I create a private yet well-lit space?

Privacy means keeping out unnecessary noise and movement. In a bid for closed private spaces, natural light ends up being overlooked. This leads to extra use of artificial light resulting in low quality areas and higher electricity bills. The designer must incorporate both qualities into the plan.

C. How do I make my office greener and healthier?

Engineered wood, plastics and paints with no quality control have a tendency to release toxic chemicals into the air which can cause chronic breathing, skin and digestion problems. They also are made using techniques that pollute the environment. Please consult subject matter experts before investing in construction materials.

D. Is this office truly for me?

One of the most important design elements is customization. A recycled plan rarely delivers. You should make sure the office is designed around your needs and habits. Allocate time to discussions with the designer.

Built by a Queen and 4 Dynasties

The Bhoganandeeshwara and Arunachaleshwara twin temple is a heritage site protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. It is located near the Bengaluru International Airport and is approximately 1207 years old. The earliest record found, is a grant towards its construction by Queen Ratnavali of the Bana Dynasty from A.D. 810. Four more dynasties have contributed to the expansion and upkeep of the temple namely the Gangas, the Cholas, the Hoysalas and the Vijayanagara Kings. It has witnessed the rule of Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan and British Colonization.
